Greg Gaspar
U10 Head Coach | The Foundation Builder
Eight years with LMRT. Twenty-five years teaching skiing. Still learning something new every day.
Greg's ski racing origin story starts with wooden skis, bike inner tubes for bindings, and an apple orchard hill in Western Pennsylvania. He and his friends spent years—ages 6 to 13—seeing who could go fastest down a 200-yard slope. They had one rule: go as fast as possible. They had zero technique: just fall at the end.
When Greg finally made it to Blue Knob at 13, he learned something revolutionary: you're supposed to turn. Whoops.
After a 22-year hiatus (life, bills, the usual), Greg returned to skiing at 35 and hasn't stopped since. Now he's on snow 4-5 days a week, December through April, teaching at Liberty Mountain Resort and coaching LMRT's U10 athletes.
His coaching superpower? Building rock-solid skiing fundamentals. Greg doesn't just teach kids to race—he teaches them to ski. Balance, edging, terrain management, turn mechanics—all the technical foundation work that matters before race tactics even enter the picture. He hands off skilled athletes to race coaches who can refine technique because the foundation is already there.
What got him into coaching LMRT? His son Lange wanted to race. Greg was already teaching at Liberty every weekend. Head Coach Rudi asked if he could help. Greg said yes. He's never looked back.
When he's not skiing, Greg's playing tennis (4.0 level player and coach), probably getting only 5 hours of sleep, and definitely doing something because sitting still isn't his style. His best ski day ever? Kicking Horse, British Columbia—alone in the bowl after 12 inches of fresh snow over 30 inches of powder base. All day. By himself. Heaven.
His guilty pleasure? PBR, flip flops, and sunshine. His dream destination? Revelstoke—also alone (sensing a pattern here).
What he wants athletes to know: "I care about you way more than you can believe. What I care most about is you becoming a great adult. Skiing is a path to getting there."
Why he coaches: "I love it. It keeps me young. I learn more about skiing when I teach others. By helping you, I'm learning too."
